Dear St. Thomas Parish and School,
Good afternoon, I'd like to pass along some information to our parish and school communities, especially given the recent story in The Evangelist and information that has been published to local media outlets today regarding challenges we face in the Diocese of Albany.
Our Diocese is in the midst of a critical period marked by declining numbers of clergy, aging parishioners, financial struggles, and shifting cultural priorities. While the challenges are significant, diocesan leaders see this as an opportunity to restructure, strengthen communities, and renew the Church’s mission with greater focus and vitality.
Bishop Scharfenberger has asked us to share his letter that outlines his vision of a diocesan-wide initiative to renew and reimagine the mission of the Church in our time.
Thanks be to God, St. Thomas Parish and School remain strong. We are blessed with pews full of faithful attendees and families, our school enrollment will increase next year, and the opportunities we have for prayer, spiritual development, and Christian service are plentiful. Because of the challenges throughout our Diocese, we are still called to walk together with the broader Church during this important time of renewal.
I invite you to read the article in The Evangelist and Bishop Scharfenberger's letter, both included below. In these remaining days of this holy season of Lent, may we open our hearts to the realities before us, seek God's guidance in times of challenge, and renew our commitment to being faithful stewards of Jesus' mission entrusted to us.
Peace to you,
Fr. Matt Duclos, Pastor
Mr. Adam Biggs, Principal
